Pre and post Prostatectomy
- Prostatectomy: This is removal of the prostate, mostly due to prostate cancer. Prostate is located at the bladder neck just underneath the bladder. During the operation, the urethra will also be partially removed. This process is likely to cause damage to the internal sphincter of the bladder and attribute to difficulty or inability to control the urine. People with prostatectomy can experience changes in bladder and sexual functions. Depending on the extent of the operation, the outcome is different. A lot of cases, patients experience Urinary Stress Incontinence (SUI), Urinary Urgency Incontinence (UUI), and urinary urgency. Some can experience post-op pelvic pain.
Conditioning the Pelvic Floor Muscle (PFM) is an important step before and after the operation. This PFM rehab includes improving the PFM resting tone, voluntary and automatic control. We can also work on lessening the abdominal and perineal pressure. We introduce the exercises called hypopressive techniques (Low pressure fitness) to the patients along with the PFM conditioning exercises
